Description

A synthetic purine nucleobase with a wide array of applications. In DNA, adenine binds to thymine, assisting in stabilization of nucleic acid structures. In RNA, adenine binds to uracil. When adenine attaches to ribose, it forms adenosine (a nucleoside), and when it attaches to deoxyribose, it forms deoxyadenosine. The nucleoside adenosine forms adenosine triphosphate (ATP) with the addition of three phosphate groups. ATP plays important roles in cellular metabolism, helping transfer chemical energy.

Adenine is also a regulatory molecule and component of cofactors NAD and FAD, as well as signaling molecules such as cAMP.

 

Applications 

• Used as a component of boron-deficient media for yeast cultivation in studies of effects of boron on yeast growth

• Used as a food supplement for rats to investigate the effects of excess dietary adenine

• Used as a nucleic acid base supplement in culture media
