Community at AG Scientific
With headquarters in San Diego, CA, AG Scientific has established strong alliances with life science companies all across the globe.
According to Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News, in the last 25 years plus, San Diego has solidly cemented itself as one of the largest biotechnology clusters in the United States. Additionally, San Diego is brimming with local research institutions and universities. San Diego boasts some of the leading research institutes such as Howard Hughes Medical institute, J. Craig Venter Institute, Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Genentech Inc., Gilead Sciences, Inc., Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology, VA San Diego Healthcare System (VAMC), University of California, Scripps Health, and more. San Diego's life science industry has gown 20% over the last 5 years!
Chip (our Founder & CEO) lost his daughter, Daly Alexandra Lindgren, to SIDS in 1999. She was 3 months old. She was down the street at daycare when he received the call. What is SIDS? SIDS is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Some people call it crib death. By definition, it’s the sudden death of an infant less than one year of age, which remains unexplained after thorough investigation by both physician and law enforcement. SIDS is the most common cause of death in infants between the ages of one month and one year, affecting nearly one out of every 1,000 live births. There are 3,000 to 4,000 SIDS deaths in the United States per year. Approximately one baby every two hours of the day and night dies of SIDS! There is no prevention for SIDS. There is currently no cure. To read a full letter from Chip's wife Valerie, click here: “Hope is a choice".
Since then, Chip and Valerie have become active board members of the San Diego Guild for Infant Survival, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We have hosted the Daly Memorial Golf Tournament every year to raise funds for SIDS research and are proud to say that we have raised >$200,000.
Through the assistance of First Candle we have assisted numerous research studies being conducted, including those by Dr. Thomas Keens (Children's Hospital Los Angeles), Dr. Henry Krous (Rady Children's Hospital San Diego), Dr. Hannah Kinney (Boston Children's Hospital), Dr. Eric Topol, and Dr. Emily Spencer (UC Health). Since 1999, the SIDS theories were numerous and unfocused. 2010 was a breakthrough year for SIDS research with the prevailing theory coming from the efforts of Dr. Kinney with help from our own Dr. Krous. The findings from the study indicate we are closing in on a defect in the brainstem related to serotonin as a likely cause for SIDS.
In 2015, Dr. Topol and Dr. Spencer launched a clinical trial aimed at cracking one of the toughest mysteries in forensic science — sudden unexplained death syndrome. The San Diego Guild for Infant Survival board donated $7,000 to aid them in their research.
"I would like to thank you and congratulate San Diego Guild for Infant Survival team for your outstanding efforts to educate and provide emotional support for parents and others who have been affected by SIDS. I am touched by your work and donate to support your cause."
