Description
Arecoline Hydrobromide (Arecoline HBr) is a betel nut alkaloid. It is an agonist of both muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Because it is a parasympathomimetic drug, it has been used as a euphoriant and shown to improve memory and learning ability. It may prove to be useful in treating dementia. It is also reported cytotoxic for endothelial cells and fibroblasts.
It has shown to activate critical genes related to β-cell regeneration, such as pancreatic and duodenal homeobox 1(pdx-1) and glucose transporter 2(GLUT-2) in rats. It can thus be believed that arecoline is effective in improving the detrimental effects caused by insulin deficiency in rats with type 1 diabetes.
