What is SIDS?

SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, is defined as the sudden death of an infant less than 1 year of age. It cannot be explained even after thorough investigations have been done. This includes a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and a review of clinical history. About 1,500 infants died of SIDS in 2013. It is the leading cause of death in infants 1 to 12 months old.

For the Lindgren family, its been almost 16 years since their daughter Daly Alexandra lost her life to SIDS when she was 3 ½ months-old. The impact of SIDS was devastating for parents Chip & Valerie, but with the support, faith, and love found in themselves, their family, and their friends, the Lindgren family decided to choose hope. They became SIDS Peer Counselors and joined efforts to help eradicate SIDS, feeling that no parent should outlive their child.

Over the years, the Lindgrens contributed to the San Diego Guild for Infant Survival. This non-profit organization supports those who have suffered a loss to SIDS. It aims to raise SIDS awareness and research efforts. Research projects supported include ones done by Dr. Hannah Kinney (Childrens Hospital Boston) who had help from San Diego's Dr. Henry Krous (Rady Childrens Hospital San Diego). The findings indicate that a defect in the brain stem in relation to serotonin is a possible candidate for the cause. The Lindgren's yearly fundraiser, the Daly Memorial Golf Tournament, benefits the San Diego Guild.

Join the conversation this November:

In the United States, there are about 3,500 Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) every year. These deaths occur among infants less than 1 year old and they have no immediately obvious cause. With continued growing awareness of the syndrome and support of scientific research studies, there can be great efforts made towards ending SIDS.

The organization will be catering 34th Annual California SIDS Conference on November 19, 2015.  It is from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM at the California Endowment Center in Los Angeles, CA. Topics of current SIDS research, updates on infant safe sleep and SIDS risk reduction, and tips on SIDS home visits will be discussed. Time with SIDS experts, SIDS parent experiences, and knowledge and experience from SIDS Coordinators and Public Health Professionals will be shared at this event that welcomes everyone.

A complimentary pre-conference event will be on the 18th from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM in the Black Pearl Room of the Embassy Suites Glendale hotel. It is planned by SIDS parent groups in Southern California and catered by the San Diego Guild. Parents will have the opportunity to share a special memory or poem about their child with the other parents. To join in on any of these events, please register by clicking here.
