Bongkrekic acid is an inhibitory ligand of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT) the inner membrane channel of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore(MPTP). It inhibits mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening. At 50 µM it inhibits dexamethasone- apoptosis in thymocytes, preventing the PARP cleavage and DEVDase (caspase-3 like) activity normally produced by these treatment.

USE
Bongkrekic acid is an antiapoptotic agent. (1) This compound protects against NMDA receptor induced neuronal apoptosis (2) It extends cell survival in cells undergoing apoptosis following infection with viral vectors and abrogated apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide in T-cells. (3) Bongkrekic acid is an inhibitor of adenine nucleotide translocase, which is a component of the Mitochondrial Permeability Transition (MPT) pore complex. Thus, it prevents mitochondrial depolarization, swelling, rupture of mitochondria outer membrane, and release of apoptogenic proteins such as Cytochrome c.
