Carbenicillin Disodium Salt Solution (100 mg/mL)
Carbenicillin is a carboxypenicillin antibiotic that inhibits formation of the cell wall (peptidoglycan cross-linking) by inactivating transpeptidases of the bacterial cell membrane. It primarily affects gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and common enteric species. This antibiotic shows a low toxicity to plant tissues.
- Carbenicillin's long standing application as a gene selection antibiotic in plant biology has a powerful role in genome editing utilizing the CRISPR/CAS9 system
- Used in genetic transformation applications to select for AmpR transformed cells
- Often preferred over ampicillin due to increased stability (allows for less contamination of unwanted bacterial colonies)
- Has been used to regulate bacterial growth in plants, low toxicity to plant tissues.
