Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. Displays a broad spectrum antibiotic activity targeting a wide variety of gram positive and gram negative bacteria especially those which cause meningitis. Used as a selection agent for transformed cells containing chloramphenicol resistance genes.
