Description

Cyclosporin C is a non-polar, cyclic peptide antibiotic comprised of 11 amino acids. Cyclosporin C demonstrates a high affinity for cyclophilin proteins and is also strongly lipophilic. This antibiotic was originally derived from Trichoderma polysporum and saw its initial use as an antifungal agent, but it has since been found to have potent immunosuppresive properties.

In clinical practice, cyclosporin C is used as an immunosuppressant in organ transplant patients. Owing to its ability to suppress immune response, it is also used in the treatment of certain autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis. It has also been shown to trigger remission of more severe autoimmune disorders, including autoimmune hepatitis

Cyclosporin C shows strong anti-hepatitis C (HCV) activity toward HCV replicons.
