Description

Harmane is a beta-carboline alkaloid that acts as an inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A. This compound is notably found in certain plants that produce hallucinogenic effects when consumed. It is, however, also naturally occurring within a wide range of mammalian tissues. Owing to its highly lipophilic nature, harmane has a tendency to build up in brain tissue, where it is found in concentrations up to 55 great times than plasma levels.

Applications

Research into harmane has principally focused on its association with various neurological disorders. High blood concentrations of harmane have been found to correlate positively with both essential tremor and Parkinson's disease. It has also been implicated in other diseases of the central nervous system, including Alzheimer's and depression.

USE
Harmane is an endogenous ligand of imidazoline receptors and benzodiazepine receptors. It also inhibits monoamine oxidase enzyme (MAO), particularly type A (MAO-A), and has been used as a short acting MAO inhibitor. Harmane displays a large development potential in the pathophysiology therapy of various CNS disorders, including Alzheimer’s and depression diseases.
