HIV inhibitors have five subclasses that treat HIV infection. Entry inhibitors (also called fusion inhibitors) prevent binding, fusion and entry of HIV-1 to the host cell. Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NtRTI) block reverse transcription. Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI) bind to an allosteric site of the enzyme to prevent reverse transcriptase. Protease inhibitors inhibit the viral protease enzyme and prevent virions budding from the host cell membrane. Integrase inhibitors block the viral enzyme integrase.
