Milbemectin is a potent insecticide made up of the A3 and A4 analogues of milbemycin mixed in proportions of 30 percent to 70 percent, respectively. These milbemycin analogues cause glutamate-gated chlorine channels within neuronal cells to open and are believed to block GABA receptors. Milbemycins are produced by Streptomyces hydroscopicus subsp. aureolarcrimosus.
Milbemectin is primarily used in agriculture as a pesticide targeted at mites. It can, however, also be effective against certain other insects and nematodes. Although it can be used to protect some vegetables and ornamental plants, milbemectin is predominantly used in the growing of fruits, especially soft-bodied berries.
Research into milbemectin has largely taken the form of toxicity studies, but other studies have attempted to more accurately observe and describe its mechanism of action.
