Description

MnTBAP also known as Mn(III) Tetrakis (4-benzoic acid) porphyrin, is a cell permeable superoxide dismutase mimetic. It is a superoxide scavenger that has a scavenging effect on peroxynitrite.  A study conducted on rat impact spinal cord injury (SCI) model showed that MnTBAP reduced the levels of SCI elevated ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) and effectively reduced neurological deficits. In another study on MnTBAP showed reduction in permeability and oxidative injury in lung contusion.

A recent study regarding Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD) has shown that MnTBAP has antagonizing effects on oxidative stress. In this experiment which was conducted on tubular epithelial cells and mice with 5/6 nephrectomy, MnTBAP showed prevention of renal fibrosis in CKD by antagonizing mitochondrial derived oxidative stress and subsequent protection of mitochondrial function.
