AG Scientific provides antibiotics from various classes, including Penicillins, Chephalosporins, Macrolides, and Carbapanems. Antibiotics in the penicillin class, such as amoxicillin and ampicillin, are used to stop the growth of bacteria and are some of the most widely recognized antibiotics. Macrolides such as roxithromycin, clarithromycin and azithromycin work by binding to a specific subunit of ribosomes and preventing any further production of the bacterial proteins.

Our highly-reliable antibiotics such as G418 sulfate and Blasticidin S have helped genetic research, as both have uses in gene selection and as gene markers. G418 specifically selects eukaryotic transformants and can be used as a selectable marker in plant and mammalian cell culture. Blasticidin S prevents cell culture contamination and plays a new role in genome editing using the CRISPR/Cas9 system.

Puromycin is another antibiotic that is impacting the world of genome editing and gene expression studies as well as drug development and cancer research. This aminoglycoside antibiotic incorporates itself into a growing polypeptide chain and causes premature termination. More recently, researchers have used this antibiotic to explore and develop a potential selective cancer therapy that would target and destroy only specific cells.

AntiBiotics

Antibiotics, such as Penicillin and its derivatives are molecules that inhibit or destroy the growth of microorganisms. Antibiotics work in a number of different ways, including the inhibition of bacterial cell wall development, protein synthesis, and DNA replication. The term antibiotic is commonly used interchangeably with the term antibacterial. Beyond their antibacterial function, antibiotics can also be categorized as antiviral, antifungal, and antineoplastic.

Apart from targeting rapidly growing bacteria cells, antibiotics can be further divided into several different classes that target specific elements of a cell or cell type in order to inhibit its growth or destroy it entirely. The unique aspects of each class allow for a more targeted approach to combatting disease, infection, and even research.
