Podophyllotoxin is a potent microtubule assembly inhibitor. It has antineoplastic and apoptotic properties so it can be used as an anticancer reagent.
The toxin binds to topoisomerase II during the late S and early G2 stage. It interferes with tubulin polymerization and thus ultimately inhibits mitosis.
Podophyllotoxin derivatives such as etoposide, etopophos, and teniposide have been successfully utilized in the treatment of a variety of malignant conditions and have shown potent antiviral, immunosuppressive and cytotoxic properties as well.
