Description
Hygromycin B is an antibiotic that is known to be effective against bacteria, fungi, viruses and assorted eukaryotic pathogens. As an aminoglycoside antibiotic, hygromycin B inhibits ribosome biogenesis by targeting the 30S ribosomal subunit and preventing translation. As a result, the compound suppresses protein synthesis within pathogenic cells.
AG Scientific's Hygromycin B solution is a sterile-filtrate solution in DI Water.
Applications
In clinical practice, hygromycin B can be used to treat bacterial infections. In the laboratory, it is frequently used as a selection antibiotic for pathogens that have developed hygromycin resistance. Research has also shown that the aminoglycoside class of antibiotics can suppress certain mutations, a fact which has been leveraged as a treatment for Duchenne dystrophy.
Antibiotics are often used in clinical in vitro tests known as antimicrobial susceptibility tests or ASTs to determine their efficacy against certain bacterial species. Hygromycin's longstanding application as a gene selection antibiotic, has a powerful new role in genome editing utilizing the CRISPR/CAS9 system.
