n-Octyl-Beta-D-Glucopyranoside (also known as OG) is a non-ionic detergent that has high water solubility, tiny uniform micelles, and a chemical structure that is well-defined. OG can form nanostructures in water that are self-assembled. These properties make OG superior to almost all other types of non-ionic detergents that are used for membrane solubilization.
n-Octyl-Beta-D-Glucopyranoside can also be easily removed by dialysis in comparison to bile salts due to its high critical micelle concentration (20-25 mM). After reconstitution, OG should be kept under sterile conditions and stored at a refrigerated temperature of 4°C. It should be stored under inert gas and tightly sealed. Contact with eyes, skin, and clothing should be avoided.
