Pyruvic Acid Sodium Salt is an intermediate in sugar metabolism and in enzymatic carbohydrate degradation (alcoholic fermentation) where it is converted to acetaldehyde and carbon dioxide by carboxylase. In muscles, pyruvic acid (derived from glycogen) is reduced to lactic acid during exertion. It is a free radical scavenger and has been shown to protect against hydrogen peroxide mediated apoptosis. Pyruvic Acid Sodium Salt is used to prepare Bull Tyrode′s albumin-lactate-pyruvate diluent and oligodendrocyte culture medium.
