Streptavidin is a protein produced by the bacterium Streptomyces avidinii and has very high affinity for biotin through streptavidin-biotin noncovalent binding. This product is a highly purified recombinant protein expressed by E. coli.
Streptavidin-biotin binding is known as one of the most stable noncovalent interactions and is stably maintained over a wide range of temperatures, pH and denaturing agents.This binding has been widely used with applications in ELISA, cell/molecular labeling, DNA probes, immunocytochemistry, protein blotting, immobilization and drug delivery systems, and in various diagnostic and research test kits.
One tetramer of streptavidin can combine with four molecules of biotin and thus can produce a powerful signaling amplification step for detection methods. In contrast to avidin, streptavidin is not linked to carbohydrate and has an isoelectric point much closer to neutrality. Such properties can minimize non-specific binding.
