Description
Tetranactin is a macrotetrolide produced by Streptomyces aureus. It is a monovalent cation ionophore with high selectivity for ammonium and potassium. It is demonstrated to inhibit synthesis and release of IL-2 by mitogen-activated lymphocytes and it shows immunosuppressive effects by affecting intracellular cation concentrations.
It has antibacterial, insecticidal and mitogenic activities. The antibiotic suppresses the growth of Gram-positive bacteria and some phytopathogenic fungi in vitro at low concentrations.
Tetranactin ionophore has limited water solubility but is soluble in most organic solvents.
Applications
• Monovalent cation ionophore
• Antibiotic
• Immunosuppressive agent
