Description

Trinactin is a hydrophobic cyclic ester that acts as a member of the macrotetrolide complex isolated from Streptomyces aureus. It is a monovalent cation ionophore with high selectivity for ammonium and potassium. It is used to help monovalent cations pass lipid membranes.

It acts as an antibiotic and affects oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. In a medium containing monovalent cation, trinactin induces hydrolysis of ATP and inhibition of tightly coupled respiration in mitochondria.

In addition, it is reported that the ionophore suppresses T-lymphocyte proliferation induced by IL-2 but without cell injury.
