Trodithietic Acid is a sulphur containing broad spectrum antibiotic generated by marine bacteria Phaeobacter inhibens and other members of genera Ruegeria and Pseudovibrio. TDA promotes algal health by killing unwanted marine pathogens.
TDA has anticancer activity and its mechanism of action is similar to polyether antibiotics such as salinomycin, nigericin, and monensin. It collapses the proton motive force by a proton antiport mechanism, in which extracellular protons are exchanged for cytoplasmic cations. TDA also contains lethal and growth-inhibitory activities against a number of cancer cell lines.
