Description

EDAC HCl is a versatile modern reducing agent. It is an easily handled solid with high solubility in water and organic solvents such as dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran and dimethylformamide.

Applications

EDC is often preferred to dicyclohexycarbodiimide (DCC) in peptide synthesis because of its ease of handling and the enhanced solubility of EDC and the urea by-product formed during the coupling reaction. The urea by-product is readily soluble in water and can easily be removed by extraction whereas the DCC by-product, dicyclohexylurea, is usually removed by multiple filtrations.

USE
EDAC is generally used as a carboxyl activating agent for the coupling of primary amines to yield amide bonds. Additionally, EDC can also be used to activate phosphate groups in order to form phosphomono-esters and phosphodiesters. Common uses for this carbodiimide include peptide synthesis, protein crosslinking to nucleic acids, but also in the preparation of immunoconjugates. EDC is often used in combination with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) for the immobilisation of large biomolecules. Recent work has also used EDC to assess the structure state of uracil nucleobases in RNA.
