Description

A highly effective inhibitor of aspartyl proteases, Pepstatin A is unique in that it contains statine -- an unusual amino acid that is active against acid proteases, including pepsin.

Practically insoluble in water and ether, this protease inhibitor can be dissolved using various solvents, such as acetic acid and ethanol.

Applications

Originally discovered and isolated from a range of bacterial species, specifically Actinomyces, Pepstatin A is able to inhibit pepsin using picomolar concentrations. Often used to study HIV proteases, Pepstatin is used to better understand the mechanisms of HIV-infected cells. It also helps prevent the degradation of hemoglobin.

USE
Pepstatin A is a potent reversible inhibitor of aspartic proteases. It inhibits the aspartic proteases cathepsin D, pepsin, and renin. Additionally, it suppresses p53-dependent apoptosis in lymphoid cells as well as TNFα-induced apoptosis in U937 cells. Pepstatin A also efficiently inhibits HIV-1 protease and Fcγ receptor induction by IFN-γ.
