Pepstatin A is a highly effective inhibitor of aspartyl proteases, Pepstatin A is unique in that it contains statine -- an unusual amino acid that is active against acid proteases, including pepsin.
Practically insoluble in water and ether, this protease inhibitor can be dissolved using various solvents, such as acetic acid and ethanol.
Originally discovered and isolated from a range of bacterial species, specifically Actinomyces, Pepstatin A is able to inhibit pepsin using picomolar concentrations. Often used to study HIV proteases, Pepstatin is used to better understand the mechanisms of HIV-infected cells. It also helps prevent the degradation of hemoglobin.
