Paromomycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic effective against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, protozoa and cestodes. The antibiotic has a similar effect as neomycin.
Paromomycin binds to a highly conserved sequence, the A site, of the 16S rRNA of the 30S ribosomal subunit in bacteria. It induces a conformational change and thus interrupts translation and synthesis of protein and leads to cell death.
It has antiprotozoal properties and treats parasitic diseases such as Leishmaniasis.
