L-ornithine is an amino acid that is produced by the removal of urea from the amino acid arginine. In the body, L-ornithine plays an important role as a hepatoprotective agent, as well as in the excretion of nitrogen. It is also a precursor molecule for the amino acids arginine and citrulline.
L-orthinine has been used in several different types of biomedical studies. Research into potential clinical applications has included clinical trials of L-orthinine as a therapeutic agent for acute liver failure. Rat studies have also been conducted into the effects of L-orthinine on the phosphorylation of mTORC1 targets in the liver. The amino acid has also been used in nutritional supplementation studies, where it has been found to reduce physical fatigue by regulating lipid metabolism.
