Dextran sulfate is a polyanionic compound that is derived from the branched glucan dextran. It is made through the esterification of dextran and chlorosulphonic acid.
For solution format, see product Dextran Sulfate, 50% Solution (D-2603).
Applications:
In laboratory settings, dextran sulfate is used widely for hybridization of nucleic acids. Specifically, dextran sulfate has the ability to accelerate the hybridization process by exerting an excluded volume effect on reaction mixes. This effect ultimately concentrates the relevant probe at mRNA strands.
The compound is also used in studies of ulcerative colitis and other forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which it can induce chemically in mice. Dextran sulfate has also been explored as a drug for blocking the instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction in islet transplantation recipients due to its ability to block the activation of serum coagulants and complement.
• Nucleic acid hybridizations: accelerant for faster probe annealing
• Anti-coagulant properties due to ability to precipitate lipoproteins from plasma solutions
• Ribosomal isolations
