Pyridoxal-5-phosphate, sometimes abbreviated as P5P, is the active form of vitamin B6. As such, P5P plays a wide variety of essential physiological roles, including acting as a cofactor of various neurotransmitters, regulating hormone and gene expression and facilitating the synthesis of certain amino acids.
Like other vitamin forms, P5P has been the subject of intensive biomedical and pharmacological research over many years. Studies have shown that increased plasma levels of P5P correlate with a lower risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women, as well as with lower levels of recognized inflammation markers in the general population.
The P5P form of vitamin B6 has also been shown to exert cardioprotective effects in patients suffering from ischemic heart disease. While the mechanism by which P5P protects the cardiovascular system has not yet been definitively established, there is evidence to suggest that the effect is a result of the vitamin's ability to prevent overload of Ca2+ ions.
