Colloquially known as lye, sodium hydroxide is a highly caustic base that is used in a wide range of both industrial and research applications. Products including paper, industrial soaps and petrochemicals are all manufactured using sodium hydroxide.
Outside of its industrial applications, sodium hydroxide is used in biochemical and pharmaceutical research as a chemical for breaking down tissues and as a reagent. Limited research has also been conducted into sodium hydroxide's ability to combat otherwise resistant prion proteins, such as those responsible for transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. Specifically, sodium hydroxide in extremely low concentrations has been shown to eliminate forms of the prion protein PrPSc that are resistant to proteinase K.
