Daptomycin is an antibiotic derived from Streptomyces roseosporus that targets Gram-positive bacteria by binding to and depolarizing their cell membranes, eventually causing cell death through loss of ordinary membrane potential.
Daptomycin is a member of the cyclic lipopeptide class of compounds, a relatively new and novel group of antibiotics. Owing to their unique mechanisms of action, these antibiotics do not display cross-resistance with more traditional antibiotic drugs.
Daptomycin is used principally in clinical medicine for the treatment of Gram-positive skin infections. It has become increasingly relied upon as a treatment for infective endocarditis. Research has also shown it to be a safe and effective treatment for osteomyelitis. Daptomycin has been found to be equally effective as vancomycin against MRSA.
