Niclosamide is an anthelmintic used to treatment tapeworm by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation. It inhibits signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway and arrests cell cycle of cancer cell with constitutively active STAT3. It is exhibited that niclosamide suppresses cell growth and induces apoptosis. This teniacide reversibly inhibits mTORC1 signaling and stimulates autophagy in vitro.
It is reported that niclosamide can inhibit replication of SARS-CoV. Replication of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is inhibited by disrupting mTOR activation. In addition, because of its protonophore activity and a capability of acting as a proton carrier, it shows that niclosamide could be used for host-directed antiviral therapies.
