Piperacillin is an ampicillin-derived broad spectrum antibiotic of the ureidopenicillin class. Piperacillin acts predominantly on Gram-positive bacteria by attaching to cell wall penicillin binding proteins, preventing the ongoing synthesis of the cell wall and leading ultimately to cell lysis. Although it is stable against some beta-lactamases, piperacillin is frequently administered in conjunction with the beta-lactamase inhibitor tazobactam to increase its efficacy against beta-lactamase-positive bacteria.
Piperacillin is often administered clinically as a treatment for polymicrobial infections. These may include post-surgical infections, peritonitis, endometritis and pelvic inflammatory disease. Piperacillin is also used for research purposes, especially for studies of drug synergy
