Streptozotocin is an antibiotic and related to DNA alkylation and methylation. Streptozotocin forms methylated purines that react with DNA in vitro. The methylating agent effects not only liver and kidney DNA, but also pancreatic DNA.
The antibiotic enters cells GLUT2 glucose transport protein and causes type I diabetes in rat models by beta-cell necrosis. It has been reported that Streptozotocin degenerates in Langerhans islet beta cells and thus induces diabetes in rodents.
Streptozotocin has anticancer properties and is used for several tumors such as leukemia, medullary thyroid carcinoma, and islet cell cancer of the pancreas.
