TEMED (N,N,N',N'-Tetramethylethylenediamine) is a tertiary amine used to catalyze formation of free radicals from ammonium persulfate (APS) and riboflavin. Because of its properties, TEMED promotes the acrylamide polymerization process.
TEMED is suitable for electrophoresis and has been tested as a catalyst for polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. However, it may affect the characteristics of sample proteins and the molecular weight measured, depending on the concentration of TEMED used for the experiment.
Applications:
- Preparation of acrylamide gels
- Used as a ligand for metal ions to form stable complexes with many metal halides.
