Description

Patulin is a type of mycotoxin that is created by different kinds of molds, including Penicillium and Aspergillus. This mycotoxin is often found in apples. It has the appearance of white crystals. It was at one time used as an antibiotic against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, but is no longer used this way. Patulin not only acts as a potassium uptake inhibitor, but also as an ion flux inducer across cell membranes. These actions contribute to protein crosslinking. Apoptosis inducer via ROS-mediated endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway.

It is soluble in DMSO and becomes a colorless, clear solution at 10 mg/mL. Patulin can be highly toxic and must be tightly sealed and stored away from light.

Applications

• Patulin can be used to inhibit potassium uptake
• Used to examine potential Patulin contamination that can occur in bottled wine
• Molecular cloning
• Induction ion flux across cell membranes
• Study of DNA damage by Patulin in E. coli
• Agricultural/diagnostic applications
