2(N-Morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid, typically abbreviated as MES, is an ultrapure zwitterionic buffer classed as one of Good's buffers. It is used widely as a buffer in assays for biochemical studies. In this capacity, MES has been applied in research relating to enzymes, receptor interactions, cytoskeletal structures and several other areas of biochemistry. MES is particularly preferred for the characterization of smaller proteins.
This buffer can also be used to maintain appropriate pH balance in plant cell cultures without impairing regular growth. One study analyzing the effects of MES on nodulation in flowering plants of the genus Medicago found that concentrations of the buffer of 2 mM and above increased nodulation rates, while concentrations as high as 10 mM exerted no observable inhibitory effect on growth. MES is not absorbed across cell membranes.
