Tris (Hydroxymethyl) Aminomethane (Tris) is a titrating agent in vivo as well as in vitro. Tris buffer has been widely used in studies concerning the gram negative bacteria cell envelope. Such studies have revealed that the effect of Tris on the outer membrane appears to be highly specific. It has been suggested that Tris alters the outer membrane permeability by disrupting ionic interactions.
Recent work related to antigen retrieval agents has shown that Tris significantly reverses formaldehyde fixation of Angiotensin 1 demonstrated by reduction of the mono-methylene (m/z 1308 Da) and di-methylene adduct (m/z 1320 Da) and regeneration of the native species (m/z 1296 Da) compared to water alone.
Studies have provided evidence that implies Tris does not act as a simple buffer inside the cell but most likely interacts with enzyme systems. Tris buffer is a very useful tool for the physiologists and pharmacologists who wish to study the effects of acid-base balance alterations. it has also been helpful in clinical medicine.
