SDS solution (10%) is sodium dodecyl sulfate in distilled, deionized water. It is known as a biodetergent which denature proteins. It is used in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for the determination of protein molecular weight. Also used in nucleic acid extraction processes for the disruption of cell walls and dissociation of nucleic acid: protein complexes.
