Aprotinin is a natural serine protease inhibitor from bovine lung tissue. It inhibits trypsin, chymotrypsin, Factor XII, plasmin and kallikrein which are related to fibrinolysis. Some proteases like Factor Xa, thrombin and pepsin are not affected by aprotinin.
Aprotinin is heat- and acid-stable, however it dissociates at pH >10 or <3 from most aprotinin-proteases. Effective concentration is equimolar with protease.
Aprotinin is used to preserve platelet number and organs for transplantation and function for transfusion.
